1967 was the year when Pontiac finally operated big changes under the hood of the GTO, with the 389ci unit getting stroked to 400 cubic inches.
Pontiac eventually shipped approximately 81,700 GTOs in 1967.
One of these GTOs landed on eBay thanks to seller spoilerecw, who claims the car was recently pulled from a shed. This is where the goat was parked by its owner in 2001, so the car spent the last decades away from humanity.
Before you jump to any conclusions and describe this GTO as a forgotten car, it’s important to know that the GTO received a restoration many years ago. The seller explains that a refresh was conducted in the ’80s, including a repaint and a cabin overhaul.
More importantly, the powertrain has also been swapped, so you now get a 1973 400ci unit and a Turbo 400 automatic transmission. The interior was red, but this overhaul included a switch to black. The car has also been repainted, and the paint now shows its age. The owner offers a detailed description of the paint, but I think it’s important that you see this GTO in person before making an offer.
The GTO was born without air conditioning, and unfortunately, someone installed an aftermarket CD player, pushing it away from its original condition. It now needs more fixes, as the speedometer isn’t working, and certain parts, including the body, require urgent attention.
The good news is that the owner managed to get the engine up and running after replacing several parts. The car has a new gas tank and carburetor, an aluminum radiator, and new brake hoses, so it should be prepared for the road if you’re not interested in a long journey. The seller says they drove the car for 30 miles, and everything was all right.
1967 GTOs are typically very desirable in the collector space, so I don’t expect this specimen to remain available for long. However, everything comes down to the price, as the more expensive it gets, the smaller the chances for this car to find a new home.
The owner posted the car on eBay with a reserve, and after two bids, the auction reached $15,100. The reserve is still in place, but considering 35 people added this GTO to their watchlists, I’m confident someone will eventually hit the reserve.
The vehicle is parked in Eakly, Oklahoma, and despite its running condition, you should take it home on a trailer. The bidding will end in four days, hopefully with someone unlocking the reserve.
